Colonoscopy

If a polyp is removed or tissues are biopsied during the procedure, they will be sent to the pathology lab, to evaluate the nature of the polyp and further testing. If the site of biopsy or polyp removed bleeds, the doctor is able to stop the bleeding with different techniques at that time of procedure. It takes 20 to 30 to complete the exam.

The recovery takes 30 minutes to a few hours but it is recommended to take the day off of work on that day.

Colonoscopy carries the risk of bleeding, infection or puncture of the colon. However the risks are low, uncommon, individual based and the benefit of catching polyps before they turn to cancer is much more significant.
